Oh the shame...I am shamelessly promoting my cosplay so that others can give me advice as I move into phase 2. You can check out the beginnings at members.cosplay.com/member/77594/..or if you have ever visited my DA account, there are photos of the cosplay in my 'scraps' ethereal-glutton.deviantart.com/Same pictures...so if you view one, you have viewed them all. Thanks

Ohhh, sweet. I'll be watching this for sure! As for the chestpiece question, I've no clue. Maybe ask one of the Kyoshi warrior cosplayers what they used for their armour?
Now I really I wish I could go to Comic Con.

First let me say that what you've done so far looks awesome! I don't know if you're looking for suggestions or not but I love to offer a few ideas if you don't mind. When making the chest piece and shoulder piece it will all depend on what kind of equipment / resources you have at your disposal to make them. The shoulder pad would be very easy to make if you had a Vacuum Form Table: www.halloweenfear.com/vacuumformintro.htmlThe shoulder looks like a cross between a piece of hockey equipment and a hollowed-out skull as seen here: dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/628.jpg dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/633.jpgYou could easily make that shape out of wood or clay and then vacuum form a sturdy styrene plastic sheet over it to form a hollow shape that you could then velcro-attach to your costume. If you don't have access to such a table but would still be interested in making it in such a way, shoot me a PM. We could work something out if you like since I have a table myself that use for all kinds of costuming & prop building. As for the chest peice... It doesn't appear to be hard-shelled like the shoulder is. I'd say it looks pretty reminescant of an umpire's chest protector: www.cbssportsstore.com/sm-rawlings-spu-outside-umpires-chest-protector--pi-91176.htmlOnly much more form fitting. If it's supposed to be a kind of armor then I'd say it's surely meant to be a type of leather Cuirass: dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/193.jpgOnly formed from one peice instead of many smaller scales. Again I'd reccommend looking for some leathery (but cheaper XD) material to cut into the half-apron, Umpire-Protector shape. Of course the bid question is; Do we ever see Smellerbee from behind? Does her chestprotector cover her backside too? Or is it all just shirt back there? Wait! Actaully I just found out! dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/637.jpgHere's a brightened pic of that shot: It looks like it does swing around the back a bit in a sort of "Bodice" or "Corset" type fashion. For the glove cuff-rings, since they're so large and extended, I'd find some 1/4" carpet foam and cut two lengths long enough fold over & glue into a pair of "bracelts" and then cover them over with white cloth. Then just wear them over your gloves around your wrists to acheive the effect. Like so: Anyway... I hope this wasn't too much. XD I just dig costuming and this is a pretty cool but still easy character to achieve the look of pretty well. Let me know if want help with that shoulder guard thingy!

Wow alternatecoppa! Thank you so much for all those suggestions. I copied them and added them to my 'smellerbee file'. I made a pattern for the chest piece that resembles an apron with a corset closure in the back. My hubby says I should make it soft like what a catcher would wear at a baseball game, but some of the screens looks like she has on a 'shell' of sorts. Its so confusing This screen shot gives me hope that I can get away with a more flexible chest piece: dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/194.jpgIt looks like she actually has form in this shot. I will let you know about the shoulder guard. My hubby has an idea up his sleeve...well see how it works. Ao Oni (my son) suggested I make it out of Sculpy, but I have had that break before. I am very impressed that you have such a table, and will really drop you a message if I can't figure something out on my own. Do you have pictures of your costumes up? I would LOVE to see them

And to think I was once impressed with this man's pumpkin-carving skills. You're a one-person industry, aren't you, coppa? Avatar_Mom, when I first saw the pics, I was really impressed (your likeness is amazing!) and was only going to suggest a bit of dirt and some shoulder-shell material... but now I think I'm going to go hide in a corner, instead. ;D You two are incredible!

I love, love, love this cosplay! This is the first Smellerbee I've seen and so far it's just amazing! And if I might add, AvatarMom, you are very pretty. Alternatecoppa - now I know who I'm going to bug when I finally get around to doing my Katara cosplay. And I think my husband might also appreciate your advice on the swords and mask for his Blue Spirit cosplay (we actually found the real swords in a shop in Vancouver's Chinatown - well, they weren't sharp, they were for use during Tai Chi exercises - but I don't think most cons will even let you use that).

It makes me happy to hear that you have never seen a Smellerbee cosplay before I was hoping it would be the first one Also, I am extremely flattered that you find me pretty I run around after boys all day (not unlike Smellerbee ) and often ignore that I am a girl. It's funny, when I am away from them, I noticed I go out of my way to look vaguely feminine Back on topic here: The Smellerbee is coming along. I made the tattered wrap, but hated how the rips came out. I am so glad I bought a few yards to play with. Honestly, I wish I could command my kittens to "tatter" on command

First of all- Thanks everyone for the awesome compliments! Second- The best way to tatter something is thus: Cut the jagged edge of the shape out of your material in the pattern you want. It will look like cartoony straight edges at this point but here's what you do next to make it look real- Take some medium to heavy grain sandpaper and rub down all the edges where the rip is supposed to be until it looks the way you want. That will soften & tatter the edges in a way that looks very realistic. You can see that's what I did to the Fett Cape in this pic: kornersphere.com/costumes/fett_pieces.jpg
Now, on to the shoulder peice... I did my research and it here's what I found: There's only one instance in the whole series that it looks like an animal skull and that's the very first shot we see Smellerbee in the episode "Jet" I don't know why the artists drew it that way because in every subsequent appearence of Smellerbee, it appears to be a smooth-to-slightly-dented metal shoulder guard with a pair of bolt-like protrusions sticking out of it. Since that's it's most common look, I figured that's the one would we pursue when making yours. The question I have for you though is about how you'd like those "protrusions" to be represented. Would you like them to be literally round just as they are seen onscreen on would you like to go with a slightly figurative representation & make them look like hex bolt heads? It's just as easy to make it look either way but I thought I'd give you an option of choice.
Also, I'm sure you're already into progress on the other clothing peices, but I thought I'd put together these illustrations to help you define the shapes better based on my research looking at screenshots: Chest Corset:Note: The shoulder straps should be thinner than they are in this drawing, I just wanted their pattern to be seen. I would recommend sewing them in at one end and then using rivet snaps to attach them at the other so you can get in & out easier: www.staticcontrol.com/ProdType1-2GOB4.aspxI also recommend they be used for the short "belt" peice that holds the two corset wings together in the back. Expanded View:As form-fitting as the corset looks in this first screenshot of Smellerbee: screenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/110/018.jpgIt never appears that way again. The corset seems to have a center "armor" buldge that somewhat obscures her feminine figure and gives her profile a kind of "paunchy" apperance: screenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/217/197.jpgSo it's up to you if you want to follow that lead or make your own more form-fitting variation. Again if want to go with the animated "paunch" look I recommend buying a square of upholstery foam & using that as the buldge in the corset's chest. Hope some of that helps.
