2 yrs difference 4 zutara = it doesn't matter 2 yrs difference 4 kataang = WTH!!! 2 YRS THATS SOOO MUCH !!! HAHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA!!! that's just so unfair.... I SO agree with that...argh... ...is it just me, or is the predominant reason people are saying they think Aang should be older is because of Kataang?

Well I think that this is a good age for Aang to be because of Kataang. It seems that in most shows the girls or boys always have a crush on those who are older than them (ie. Aang with Katara, Katara w/ Jet maybe). So by Aang being madly in love with Katara and Katara not noticing him all that much cause of his age makes the fans root for Aang more. We want to see him get her attention unlike if he was older then it would be no problem for him to get her.

This seems to belong in relationships. I'm only going to say that I disagree strongly with twelve-year-old love and I'll stand by that no matter how canon Kataang gets. I have a 12 yr old male cousin and have had 12 yr old female cousins and neither one had any business being in any kind of 'love' relationship at that time. That's only my opinion of course. However, I think it's important for the storyline that the savior of the world be a child rather than a teenager. That's why I think they made him noticeably younger than everyone else until Toph came along. The youngest, and therefore least likely, leads the way. So, on the basis of the storyline I think it wouldn't be as powerful or as fun if he were a teenager. On the subject of love, I've stated my opinion more than once on the relationship board. There are many things a 12 year old has no business being involved in, yet Aang has no choice in the matter, he has to do what he has to do.

I like Aang as a 12 year old.
I think the reason some people don't like Katara (14) being paired up with Aang (12) is not so much the gap in age--after all, two years isn't very much and it would not be an issue at all if they were adults--as the gap in maturity that the age gap represents. Kids develop a LOT, both physically and mentally, between 12 and 14. It seems like a larger gap than it is because of that development. Same with 14 and 16, IMO, but there does seem to be a double standard in our society where if the girl is the younger one it's OK.
When I was 14, I wouldn't have gone out with a 12 year old.

Yes and no.
What I would have liked to see was all of the characters being two years older. Thus Aang would be 14 and all of the others would be older as well.
I could care less about the age gap for relationships.
I think that the themes of the show are more inline with a PG13 rating and thus I feel that the shows main character should be at least 14.

Well remember Star Wars Episode I, Anakin and Padme met around the same age, I think? Was Anakin really 12 when he first met Padme? Well that could foreshadow how Katara and Aang will be.

I think Aang is way better of being 12 then 16. People have the tendency to underestimate children, and kids these days mature fast. For a 12 year old Aang is very mature. And even though I'm a shipper of Zutara, Katara does show intrest in him. I mean it's only a 2 year age difference, it's legal.
Even though when I was 12 I wouldn't have dated a kid who was even a few months younger then me.

Yea It would be weird if Aang was 16, I guess because we all know him as being a 12 year old kid..?

So what if he's mature at a young age? He has to save the world for crying out loud! There isn't a lot of room for fooling around like most 12 year old boys do. And him being the oldest in the gang...I just think it would be really weird.

Aang was a simple monk after all, but I think he's better off as a 12 year old. I agree. Aang's better off as a 12 year old. I don't see a problem with a 12 year old going out with a 14 year old, but I can see why people would but our society is totally different from that within the realm of Avatar's. Well, it has been proved that girls who are in their teens, are psychological two years older then boys. So that would make Katara even more mature then Aang. (You can see it in 'our' world, girls often go with slightly older boys) But I think the point of Aang being only 12 is that he is so independent. He has no parents who say how to handle things. It makes everyone around him caring for him, although they admire how wise he is for his age. It does make his fight with Firelord Ozai kind of frightning. It's that he has thinks like a 12 year old, but has the responsibility's of 20. I don't know, sometimes his way of thinking makes me; "well, when I was that old guys still played soldiers and thought girls should only look pretty and be popular."

I think people are forgetting that this is a show on Nickelodeon. Has anyone ever noticed the commercials during Avatar? It's aimed between the ages of 8-12 (don't quote me on this, and if someone has the actual stats, let me know). They kept the age of Aang near the age of the average viewer so the viewer could relate (though as well all know, I don't know any 12-year-olds that can, lol) and have a higher interest in the show.

of course he should be 12. A big part of the show is how he is just a kid but has to grow up fast and have the weight of the world resting on his sholders. I love the fact that we get to watch him grow up especially in book 3. its one of the many things that makes this show great

I don't mind him being twelve years old, but it still kinda weirds me out that a twelve years old boy can save the world. I mean it's cool, but weird.
Like there's this kid in my church. One day I ask him "say how old are you" and he says "I'm twleve". And I'm like dude because he's just this tiny little thing. And I'm just staring him and thinking "I wonder if he could save the world..." Then he gets hit by a stray volleyball and starts cryinig and I'm thinking no because how's he gonna stand up to fireblasts if he can't even take a volleyball.
I know Aang's pretty mature for his age and he's more than capable of saving the world.. but man.. it's still kinda weird. But then again it's a cartoon so.

I like Aang as 12, because of the themes it brings up in the story.
Can someone so young REALLY bring about universal healing? When generations of experienced adults in power cannot seem to get it right, can it be someone so young and new to life that leads the world to peace?
That, and all the character struggle in brings up in Aang. Saving the world? That seems an impossible task for ANYONE. Let alone for a child who is still maturing and learning to deal with smaller problems, like how to cope with frustration.
Just consider Roku, a man in his old age, ripe with wisdom, could not prevent the war. And so now a young boy, who has barely even been taught the concept of war (being a peaceful monk) prior to discovering the war itself, must somehow restore balance?
It's a fascinating subject, because children ARE inept. It's just a fact. That's why kids so often pick on each other or can't get along without an adult around as an authority figure. The judgment center of their brains is still developing, and won't be fully developed until they reach their mid-twenties. And yet now, a child is placed in the situation where HE must overcome his own short-comings to save EVERYONE. This child is now the authority figure, this child is the one that must play adult for the rest of the world. And it is no small order.
That's why Aang so often turns to Katara, it's overwhelming and beyond his capacity to do this all alone. And yet, he must do this.
