The morning sky was as clear as blue and a only a slight chill lingered within the alpine breeze. A cliffside trail winded around one of the steep mountains neighboring the Southern Air Temple. Quick feet scampered through the rocky trail gaining altitude. In her blue light coat, Mika dashed toward her destination with haste as if she was racing the sun. As a matter of fact, that was exactly what she was doing. Mika had been awake since before sunrise. Once dawn arrived, she had to jog from the Temple to the other mountain and make it toward her destination before the sun could fully rise above mountaintops east from the temple. The top of the sun had just made it over the peaks. That meant she only had short amount of time left.
By now the crisp dry air had no affect on her bare throat. She was fully determined that she would make it this time. It had been 15 days since she first started training with Aang. During that time the training consisted of regular sparring matches and meditating, but every morning she had to run the trail. And if she was able to make it before the sun hovered over the peaks, Aang would bring on more specific exercises. So far, she hadn’t been able to beat the sun. But today, “I’m going to make it!” Mike thought resolutely.
As the trail spiraled upward, the slope started leveling off. “Finally!” She made it to the top. “Almost…there” she huffed. In the distance spanned a wide ridge off the mountain where Avatar Aang awaited her. From there Mika briefly shut her eyes as she forced her body to run faster and ignore any fatigue. Then looking ahead she saw Aang motioning her with his hand. She slowed down, bringing her own pace to an eventual halt next to the monk.
She supported her upper body with her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. “Well done Mika. You made it this time. And ‘just’ in time I might add.” He cupped his hand over his forehead as he watched the sun slowly rise over the mountains. He put his hand into his robe and pulled out a circular canteen, handing it to Mika. She accepted the offer wholehearted. Mika open the container and splashed a mouthful, soothing her throat almost immediately.
“Thanks,” she murmured as she looked ahead across the ridge. Right up ahead there was a large square area of wooden posts sticking out from the ground similar to the airball arena at the base of the Air Temple. But these posts were spaced out uniformly and all had an even height. There were also no goal posts. Aang never told her what this area was for. The avatar then said to her, “Let’s let you catch your breath a little before we continue. And he sat down right at the spot and began to meditate. Mika was really getting tired of these meditating exercises, but at that moment with her exhaustion, she didn’t mind. She sat right beside him and focused on her breathing.

Back at the glacial valley, Toph stood several feet behind Kenai and watched his performance. Kenai held a strong earthbending stance. With full concentration he then stepped forward and stomped his foot onto the ground. At the following second a pillar of ice sprouted from the ground in front of him. The bluish-white structure was just as tall as him. Kenai released a leer and cried out a cheerful “Yes!” Finally for the first time he managed to get it right. The past two weeks was nothing but various forms of strength training with ice while having regular matches against Toph. But he wouldn’t be able to move on to other exercises until her could perform, what Toph calls, basic earthbending techniques. Of course the material used in this practice was solid ice. Pretty much the objective of the task was to summon up ice like an earthbender; instead of using the flowing movements of a waterbending, he has to use quick yet blunt movements (which in this case was stomping his foot). When Kenai had first attempted the exercise, it had always ended up as a total fiasco. At first when he stomped forward nothing would happen. Eventually whenever he’d stomp his foot forward, his foot would break right through the ice, sending his leg knee deep into a hole while dealing with Toph’s loud and not-so-motivating comments. The only hint Toph would repeatedly give Kenai was to focus his energy properly. From there he had to figure it out himself…which he did today.
“Stay focused!” Toph shouted harshly, breaking his brief moment of self-praise. “Now that you have managed to make a defense, you’re gotta turn it into an offense, now fire that thing straight toward your opponent.”
Kenai looked at the massive chunk of ice and gulped. He almost forgot about the second part. He remembered clearly the demonstration Toph had showed him before. Stomping forward after the rock rises from the ground you have to punch it forward at high speeds. But he didn’t lose his cool. He felt enough confidence not to hold back. Facing ahead he launched a powerful punch straight onto the ice pillar. Upon impact of his fist, the top half of the pillar broke off and was sent flying…several feet before slamming onto the ground. Kenai just held his stance and expression, completely frozen. He couldn’t hold it for long; his eyes began to water as the surge of pain engulfed his now swollen fist. His knees buckled as he clutched his fist close to his chest and other hand. “Ow…” he whimpered a meek sob, “Ow……ow.”
He then gave a big “oof” has Toph slammed a hard pat on his back, “Nice, Kenai. You manage to complete the sequence. You did a terrible job with the offense part, but you did it nonetheless. All the energy you focus to the ground has to be lifted to your arm and upper body. And again, it doesn’t flow upward slowing like waterbending, you gotta be sturdy and swift. We’ll work on that. But now, let’s try something new.” She started off but then stopped as she sensed Kenai’s slow pace, his fist his hand clutching his fist, “Are you crying, Mama’s boy. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that much.”
Kenai slowly caught up and stiffly murmured, “It…hurts.”
Toph just pouted but then started chuckling, “You know, if your booboo is hurting that bad, you can always put ice on it.” She laughed obnoxiously. Kenai wasn’t very amused, though he was considering the suggestion.
---
“Hey!” Mika cried out to Aang who swiftly hopped across the top of the poles. “You said we weren’t using bending.” Mika was balanced with each foot mounted on a wooden rod. Mika had been trying to tag Aang the entire time. That was her only objective; all she had to do was land a finger on the Avatar. But from her understanding, he said no bending allowed, and she clearly noticed he hand been using his airbending.
“I didn’t say not to use your bending, Mika.” Aang explained, “I said that you cannot ‘attack’ with your bending, not dismiss it all together. You already know that firebenders are a master at applying their bending as a direct offensive. The traditional art promotes you use fire as the weapon, but it doesn’t stress to use its properties for other features. The majority of the time airbenders utilize their element indirectly; they bend the air to ‘support’ their movements and enhance their dexterity - whether it’d be defensively or offensively. In your cause it would be for the offensive. So like an airbender, you utilize your element to catch me. Traditionally, an airbender would try to close in on their opponent. Then once they are right at their opponent’s face, they unleash a blast of wind with all their might. The point to this exercise, Mika, is to learn how to utilize your element as a support rather than as a weapon. If you can catch me without utilizing fire as a weapon, then you’d have a greater chance of intimidating and overwhelming your adversary.” Mika analyzed what the Air Monk had elaborated. She thought about how it was possible to use fire as a “support.” She then thought about what she had learned from her dad. She remembered him talking about the different methods of igniting a flame through bending and the different degrees of propulsion. She then came up with an idea.
Clutching her hands, she took a stance, giving Aang the indication to continue. Hopping to the side on a pole she dashed forward to Aang. The Avatar stood in place and watched the young firebender reach closer and closer to him. Mika knew that he would dodge her move at the last minute, and it’s exactly what she hoped for. Finally Mika jumped forward to land a heavy punch with right fist. Aang swiftly sidestepped to her right. At that moment, still airborne, she swiped a kick with her left leg while a blast of flame thrusting her leg at incredible speed. Aang, realizing the situation at the last minute, managed to perform a quick duck under the kick. Mika’s expression became a total shock a she realized she missed. Her loose momentum caused her to complete a back flip and a half. When she lost the torque to her spin, she was about to fall on her back…onto of the wooden posts. Fortunately at the last minute she was caught in the arms in the monk. Once she realized had happened she looked up to Aang and gave a weak giggle. Aang helped her to her feet and said, “Well you finally get it now Mika. Though I see you didn’t expect the flame to have that much kick. No pun intended.” Aang gave a contagious laugh to Mika. “Yeah, that really gave me a boost. I didn’t know it‘d be that strong.”
Aang replied, “And knowing your strength is crucial. Not only will you need to focus on your movements, but you will also need know how much thrust to provide with each flaming swing of your limb.” The monk pulled out a bison-shaped whistle, “Now today when you perform your Tai Chi exercises back at the temple, I want you to ‘play with fire.’ With every motion you use, you’ll build of much better insight on the propulsion behind the flame,” he then blew the whistle. “Will do that after some tea and a light snack.”
---
“You done eating yet, Prince?” Toph got up from her sitting position as she wiped a few crumbs off her shirt.
Her heard Kenai give out a “Mmm hmm” as he chewed the last bits of his ham and bread, sitting on a dirt ground, yellow clumps of grass scattered among the patches of snow. Kenai grabbed his long waterskin and chug down some water to wash down the rest of his meal.
“You know I told you to have a waterskin full of canteen, right?”
“Yes, yes.” He assured her, “I remember clearly. That won’t be a problem.” He eyed the nearest patch of snow. Then with a twist of his wrist, it melted into a levitating mass of liquid before streaming into his waterskin. Kenai put the waterskin strap around him and stood up. “Okay, I’m ready. What are we gonna do now?” The two were standing near the edge of a cliff that looked over the glacier below.
Toph walked off a distance before answering, “You’re going to fight me.”
“Again?” Kenai snorted.
“This time, with limited resources. You’re not always going be walking over a big glacier or next to a plentiful stream. And you won’t always come across someone tossing big rocks at you. That’s why you’ll only be able to use the water you carry. You get me? So, I’m going to play the role as an opponent who’s skilled only with their fists or with a weapon at hand.”
“Okay, sounds fair enough.” Kenai said plainly.
“I’ll only give you a few seconds to prepare yourself. After that, I’m coming after you. Once you lose the water you have it’s over. Kapeesh? “
Kenai thought this would be interesting. “Okay, uh…whenever you’re ready then.”
“Here we go.” Toph alerted. She stood up straight and put her arms up in front of her, elbows bent at 90 degrees. Suddenly, small stones from the area started flying towards her like a magnet. The pebbles and rocks clustered and accumulated all around her fists and forearms. Toph now had the hands of rock golem. Once the last few pebbles merged, she pounded her fists together an smirked. Kenai cringed, which was his first wrong move. It wasn’t until the last minute he realized that those first few seconds were up.
Toph sprinted right toward him with a fist already retracted into position. Kenai swiped his water out of the container and launched the tentacle of water straight at Toph in attempt to whip and stun her in place. Toph, with her keen hearing, sensed the oncoming attack and smacked the water with her stone fist. Kenai managed to retract the whip just in time to dodge her first blow, a strong forward punch. With her other arm she went up with an uppercut. Kenai bent backwards. She missed again, but she kept right at it. One punch and jab after another, Toph bombard him with an almost nonstop series of punches. Kenai managed to elude every attempt; on many occasions he used his water whip to swerve away any close calls. He manage to pull an offensive now and then; He would shove Toph back with a gush of the water, and whip her shoulders. But Toph wouldn’t back down. Even after taking several hits, her pace hardly fazed.
Pushing away Toph with another geyser of water, he quickly compressed it back into the whip and wrapped it around her waist in effort to slam her down. But with one clean swipe of her stone fists, she cut the whip in two. The water that had wrapped around the earthbender broke off from Kenai’s concentration. He now only had half the amount of bending water left and the earthbender was coming in as fast as ever. Without enough water to make a substantial whip, which helped bring relief by making some distance, he had no choice but to face her with a much more ‘head-on’ approach. With little time to think it was monkey-see-monkey-do for Kenai. The blob of bending water he had split in two and covered his hands and over his wrist. Quickly they crystallized into gauntlets of ice. Toph shot a punch right toward his chest. Kenai crossed his arms just in time to block the blow.
The waterbender jumped back away from her immediate reach. Toph readied her arms as Kenai made a bold attempt on stealing the offense. He had learned that in most cases it was better to fight head on than to back away in hesitation, at least when it came to fighting Toph. He sent over a flurry of punches toward her. Most of that time Toph was stuck with her forearms up in a guard. Kenai continued his aggressive approach in hopes of breaking her block. Unfortunately that’s where his entire focus was. Kenai retracted his left arm and launched a forceful punch. Instantly Toph sidestepped to his left as his momentum continued sending his torso forward. The earthbender easily took advantage of that; Toph kneed Kenai right in the gut. For a split second his body fired up from the ground, but he quickly collapsed forward and barely managed to catch himself. On his knees and fist, he tensed his body. But the pain was bearable. He had felt plenty worse pain from Toph. But to his misfortune, the pain was enough for him to lose his concentration on his ice gauntlets. The gauntlets shattered into small watery shards; he had to keep the ice from cracking with his bending while he was punching.
“You lose,” Toph said plainly. She lifted her arms and flicked them down. Her stone fists broke off as the rocks slammed to the ground.
Kenai picked himself up, breathing away the soreness, “Ah, I think I did okay.”
Toph shrugged, “It’s was good to see you figured to try something different than that water whip,” she put her hand to her shoulder. “But I could definitely tell you’re not so experienced with fist-to-fist combat. Being the skilled opponent, I was able to notice your degree of inexperience and played along with you into went in a mad frenzy. You gotta try an approach you’re more familiar with.”
“More familiar with?”
“Yeah. You see, this is the type of situation where you have to combine everything you know and you have to time it right too.”
Kenai just thought to himself, “Something I’m more familiar with…”
---
On top of one of the Temple’s balconies elongated flames trailed off Mika’s hands and feet as she twirled and hopped with much elegance. Her eyes were half open as she was in a semi-meditative state. Her motions were actually much speedier than the usual slow pace of Tai Chi. Reason being, the flames from her limbs were actually applying thrust, boosting her movements. Each set of motions ended with a dramatic twist; she would either twirl her body until she momentarily hovered off the ground or complete a double flip. The four flames from her hands and feet winded around her like looping comets.
Avatar Aang was sitting at the other end of the balcony enjoying the show with a small cup of tea. Momo snuggled asleep on Aang’s lap with a few crumbs stuck to the fur of his lips. Aang sipped his tea quietly as he commented in thought, “She’s sure is a fast learner.”
---
Toph was jogging up the slope along the mountain stream, “That’s it! Keep going your almost to the top. You better not back down, Princey. You’re going to have to do this twice tomorrow if you stop.” Toph’s words were blurred out of Kenai senses. A large chunk of ice on his back, he breathed aggressively as he towed his way against the rushing water. All he had registered in his mind was that he was going to make it up to the top of the slope.
---
Several more days had past and the weather was significantly warming up since Kenai and Mika first arrived. The early mornings were now accompanied by the whistling and chirps of songbirds and the trees and grasses dotted with different color blooms. The late alpine spring had finally revealed itself fully. Aang and Mika, who had her hair in a single braided ponytail, sat together out on the balcony as usual. Though they enjoyed the warming of spring, they were focused on much hotter temperatures. The two breathed deeply and rhythmically, holding their palms in front of them. A ring of fire hovered over their fingertips. Mika put her hand out as the ring began to dance around her arm. Putting out her other hand, the ring twirled a figure eight around her wrists. She then halted the ring between her palms. The ring then spun across the perpendicular axis; the spinning ring now looked like a fiery sphere.
“Well done, Mika,” Aang congratulated. “You most certainly have the hang of this. Your fueling the flaming consistently with perfect balance.” Mika just giggled. She could help but to have fun with the exercise.
---
“So ya ready?” Toph asked, standing a distance away at Kenai’s side. The two were back on top of the mountain glacier.
Kenai held a strong earthbender’s pose, “Sure am!” He gave a confident smirk.
“Okay, first, the basic quick and strong offensive from the strong defensive.” Toph ordered.
Kenai stomped forward and a thick ice wall, almost as thick was it was wide, ejected from the ground in front of Kenai towering just over his head. There he had his quick and strong defense, now for the strong offense. He brought back his arm, opening his palm. He then launched his hand forward, right into the wall. Upon impact the wall fired forward at a blazing speed. It made incredible distance before hitting the ground and skidding across even farther. Kenai watched the hunk of ice fly across the flat glacial surface with excitement. “Not bad at all,” Toph managed to sense the distance of the projectile, “That’s a record for you. Now give me quick yet strong offense.”
Kenai thought to himself as he figured stronger either meant a bigger rock or more rocks. Moving quickly, Kenai conducted both his arms up high. Two pillar of ice sprouted at both of his sides. The two pillars than snapped off their bases and their peaks faced forward as Kenai swiped his arms forward. Kenai retracted both his arms and then swung them forward on a big stomp. The pillars fired ahead as giant missiles. The projectiles made about the same distance as the previous shot.
“Nice, nice,” Toph nodded, “But now let’s get real, you ‘are’ more likely to be around water than on top of a field of ice. Now starting with water, how can you create and hold a defense while sending an attack? A defense with a separate offense.”
“Sheesh,” Kenai thought how Toph made everything sound like a riddle. The waterbender swayed his arms in an underhand motion as the ice around him melted and then molded in front of him into a smooth oblong shape. But only the center of the structure froze as the water circulated around the edges. As the center solidified the outlining water split into tiny individual spheres which then shaped into dozens of conic blades. Kenai slammed the center ice wall with his palm and the ice daggers fired ahead.
Toph had her arms crossed with a hand to her chin. She smirked as she heard and felt Kenai’s every move. “Impressive, Prince. Pretty creative there.”

Engulfed in flames, Avatar Aang’s hands sliced through the air as he endeavored to hit the young firebender. Mika evaded the blows with ease as her body dodged every attack with a circling motion. The flame from her hands provided a sufficient amount of torque. But it wasn’t the direct blows that Mika was challenged by. The hardest part was preventing Aang to swerve behind her with enough time to bring her down. The two battled across the flat area at the base of the temple. Patches of green dotted across the surface. They had been dueling for almost five minutes at about the same pace. Mika had to admit, along with the tension, she was getting a bit tired but at the same time she would have never kept up for so long if it wasn’t for the training.
Mika’s eyes widened with a gasp. She had attempted a low spin kick to trip Aang and again she added a little too much power behind her kick. It was enough to face the opposite direction of Aang after the spin. “No!“ She cried in her head. She couldn’t lose after going this far. By sheer instinct her hands and feet flared up and she whirled her body. A large wall of fire encompassed her body, providing the immediate protection.
Aang had already backed away from Mika when she formed the shell of fire. But at the next second when the shield seemed to subside, he charged toward her before she could be aware of her location. Aang’s eyebrows then furrowed as he skidded to a stop and gazed at her. The shell of fire had actually formed into four discrete orange hot halos which spun around Mika. Mika only turned her head to face Aang. Not wasting a second, the princess spun in circle, increasing the spin of the halos which burned even brighter. Then flailing her arms forward, one halo broke off into a jet of fire zooming right toward the Avatar. Aang swiftly dodged it only to come across an approaching arc of fire. The horizontal arc was just high enough to the monk to simply duck low to the ground…just what she wanted. Mika was already twirling her body again, merging the two remaining halos into on large one. The halo then snapped and swirled upward as a long spiraling serpent of fire. As a matter of fact, that’s exactly what it was. The front of the flame formed the head of a dragon as it advanced on the Avatar in a large spiraling path, the flames roaring with the sound of a monster. The dragon’s head loomed over Aang rapidly. The monk readied a blow to counterstrike its attack when he realized far too soon that the dragon wasn’t going to attack him. Instead, the dragon circled around the Avatar until its entire body whirled around him. It enclosed Aang in a shell which was slowly closing in on him. With quick thinking the monk bended the air around him to spin the opposite direction of the flames. The fiery caged quickly dissipated. He stopped spinning to regain his stance, but it was too late. Too fingers pointed closely to his neck. Mika had appear from right under his nose. Aang made direct eye contact with her; the two stood motionless. Aang smiled. Mika smiled back. “Looks like you beat me,” the monk admitted defeat. Mika couldn’t help but slump her upper body with a sigh of exhaustion, “Phew! You don’t know how bad I was hoping that that would work. That took the rest out of me, heheh.”
Aang laughed, “That was definitely a quite a stunt you pulled there. You fooled me completely thinking that was a full frontal attack, but it was all a ‘support.’ ”
Mika crossed her arms proudly, “Yup, just like you taught me.”
“And after such an extended match. Mika, you have the movements and thinking of a skilled airbender.” He cupped his fist and bowed to Mika.
Mika put her hands to the side and bowed as well, “Thanks, Aang.”
---
Back on the high cliff that edged over the ice valley Toph and Kenai stood face to face. Toph’s bangs swayed in the still breeze. “What’s that extra thing you have on you? Is that another waterskin?” Toph noticed a shape hanging off of Kenai but couldn’t quite make it out.
“Yeah, it is.” Kenai responded. He fiddled his fingers under his mittens. He had two waterskins hanging to his sides; their straps crossed over and around his shoulders.
“Okay, just checking,” Toph specifically said he could only use the water that he was carrying. So if he thought an extra waterskin full would help, “Whatever floats his boat,” Toph said to herself.
Without saying anything else, she raised her arms in front of her and a barrage of rocks and pebbles swooped from all around the area and clumped around her fists and forearms. With her stone gauntlets completely formed, the earthbender charged at the waterbender. Once at proximity, Toph lunged a fist toward Kenai. A loud clank stopped her blow. The moment had completely caught her off guard for at that first second she wasn’t sure what she had hit. Tracing back the last few seconds, she sensed Kenai extracting the water out of the water skin into two short whips that… “Ahhh…” Toph said with an impressed tone, “So your dad has showed you a few moves of his own.”
Toph retreated a few feet away from Kenai. The waterbender stretched his body in a particular firebending stance with two broadswords of ice at hand. “He’s trained me ever since I was able to hold a sword. It’s just something I’m familiar with.”
Toph grinned as she pounded her fists together, “This’ll be fun.” Toph then charged back at the swordsman.
---
Toph battered her punches onto Kenai’s crossed swords. He could only block from her strikes for so long. As hard as he could crystallize the ice, it still cracked under the repetitive force of her rock fists. Withdrawing a distance from her strike he would manage to grab enough time to liquefy the cracked sections of the swords and re-solidify them. This was a huge advantage: he could heal the fractures on his sword, while Toph can’t heal her own set of weapons. And every chop from his sword chipped off bits of her stone gauntlets. She now only had half of what she had started with.
Dodging her last blow, the offensive switched back to Kenai. He forced Toph to block from his assertive approach, sending powerful blows of slicing and dicing from all directions. But he knew he couldn’t keep it up; Toph would figure out how to beat his offensive again. With her arms over her head, tense from his blows, Kenai knew exactly how to finish it. After giving one more hit on her rock covered arm, he spun around to the right. While whirling, he ducked low and his right sword liquefied completely into a water whip. Kenai sent the whip right at Toph’s ankle where it quickly wrapped around. With one swift, upward tug on her ankle the earthbender quickly fell backwards. As she hit her back, her gauntlets broke into pieces. Kenai aimed his left sword right over Toph.
Toph smirked instantly, “And here I was underestimating you. Didn’t think you knew breaking the footing is an earthbender’s weakness.”
Kenai cocked a brow and smiled, “I figured it’d be anyone’s weakness.” He then deposited the water from his right into the waterskin and offered Toph a hand. “And weren’t the one telling me not to underestimate the opponent.”
Toph grabbed his hand and got up, “Well…to translate, I was insinuating that I was going easy on you.”
“What?! Just admit it. I beat you. The world’s greatest earthbender got beaten by a spoiled prince.” Kenai said with a mocking tone.
Toph just shrugged nonchalantly, “Oh well, you don’t have to believe me.”
“Na-ah. If you ‘think’ you can do better, then lets go. I up for it.” Surprisingly Kenai a lot of confidence.
Toph just trotted off and gave a wave, “Eh…well do it tomorrow. But for now, just give yourself a pat on a back. You did pretty good today.”
Kenai relaxed his shoulders. He turned his head and looked out to the cliff’s edge and across the landscape. He never would’ve guessed how…rewarding this whole trip outside the Fire Nation would be. And it was only the first few weeks. He would have never expected such intense training. He eyed his ice sword. He looked at his faint reflection. He thought of how proud his parent would be. His father and mother told him that traveling around the world was possibly the greatest experience for them. Kenai felt even more excited about the upcoming summer months.
“Hey Kenai! What’s the stalling for?!” Toph yelled, “You know, you’re still climbing up the stream, right?!”
“Oooh,” Kenai whined a sigh.

LOL @ matsterwb. Sorry to keep ya waitin' ;D And thanks everyone! I'm most certainly pleased to hear you enjoyed it. ;D And it was a long chapter. I was thinking of splitting it into two chapters, but then I decided to finish up the training segment into one. (It was about 8 pages typed...times new roman, size 10) That's why I had to split it into two posts it was so long... Well for the next mini-saga, Mika and Kenai will be visiting the Swamp for the first time with Aang, and they meet up with some people they might...or might not get along with.
