In this story Aang beings to have regrets about leaving his training, not only is he torn, but he doesnt realize he's hurting Katara again.
If Only
( Cut to a few days after Aang is fully recovered from the lightning blast he received from Azula, he sits at the edge of the temple stairs meditating, but clearly he is not at ease, he sweats profusely, and flashbacks play through his mind).
*Walks toward his astral form, he sees Katara in trouble*
*If you leave now, you wont be able to enter the Avatar State at all, exclaims Guru Pathik.*
* “Aang I knew you would come,” says Katara.
* “The only way is to let her go”
(Aang snaps out of his meditation, clearly upset with himself)
“I should have stayed, If I did, I would have had more time to learn to summon it quicker,” he mutters resentfully. “But I couldn’t leave her in trouble like that”.
“ I should have listened to Pathik, I should have known better, its my fault Ba Sing Se has been taken over.”
( Aang is alerted by the sound of Katara’s footsteps walking next to him)
“Aang , I see you are doing much better than before,” she exclaims.
(In a dull tone) “I guess you can say that”, Aang says quietly.
(Concerned, she kneels beside him) “Aang, something is wrong with you, you are not yourself, you know that you can tell me anything,” Katara reassuringly tells him.
“Its nothing really, (he rises to his feet, but doesn’t smile) I should be going to finish my mastery of waterbending, and then we will head out to find me a teacher to help me with firebending,” he tells her. “I’ll help you to train,” she calls out to him, but Aang refuses, “I would rather do this alone, if you don’t mind.
(Clearly disappointed) “Ok then, good luck,” she softly speaks.
(She watches him leave down the stairs towards the lake at the base of the temple, her eyes clearly filled with a mixture of sadness and confusion. She turns away and head back to the inner sanctum of the the temple where Sokka, Toph, Momo, Appa, Bosco, and the Earth King are resting. Sokka notices his sister’s upset expression, and goes to her.)
“ Katara, why are you looking like that,” he asks with a surprised look.
“ Im worried about Aang, Sokka,” she hesistantly answers. “He’s not acting himself, I went to check on him, and he sort of brushed me off, as if I wasn’t there. (She sadly looks away) Maybe he just needs more time to heal.
“I guess that’s what he needs, I suppose,” Sokka tells her.
Later That Afternoon.
( Aang is in the center of the late once again meditating, he is once again clearly not at ease, in a flash back, his astral form and his human form stand beside him, each giving their views on what he must do)
*Astral form: (otherworldly tone) Stop wasting time, harness this power and destroy the opposition.
*Human: would you really let her go for a power that could kill you, did you forget what happened last time?*
*Astral: This gives you heightened sense on what you do in the state, power is instantly granted at your fingertips, let her go, don’t risk the world just for her.
*Human: She gives you the power to go on, to fulfill your duty, practice, study, and discipline is the way, not by glowing it up*
*Astral: The world is at stake now Aang, why still hold on? You know you cannot run from what you were destined to do.
*Human: The power to change destiny rests with you.
(Aang lets out an anguished cry, and unleashes a massive burst of water out in front of him, he slumps down only from his neck upward is visible above the water line, cut to a profile of his face, tears stream down the side of it, as he is clearly distressed over the situation. He doesn’t see Katara behind him, but he senses her presence, Aang rises )
“Why did you come,”? he asks sternly. Katara speaks out in a clearly worried tone, “I want to know what is going on with you Aang!” This is clearly not you, don’t tell me this is a repeat of how you acted when were at the Serpent’s Pass,” she defiantly states to him.
(Seeing that an argument was about to ensue, Aang beckons her forward, and turns to face her)
“I didn’t master the Avatar State,” he quietly speaks. Katara motions to him, “Is that the reason why you are acting this way towards me?”
Aang replies, “ I was so close to achieving control over it, and then I sensed you were in trouble, so I forsook it. I’m starting to think I should have stayed a bit longer to gain fuller control over it, if I had done that I probably would have sensed Azula sneaking up behind me. Because of you, I came back to Ba Sing Se. Guru Pathik told me I needed to let you go completely if I was to have complete Mastery of the Avatar State.
(Katara stares at him in surprise)
“Aang we have talked about this before,” she replies, her voice breaks slightly, Aang turns his back to her once again, you know how distressed I become when I see you suffering in that form. Before she can speak more, Aang cuts her off sternly. ‘This time around I had more control of how I summon it, instead of my emotions running haywire,” you wouldn’t understand anyway.
“How would I not understand?” she replies sulkingly. Aang becomes irritated, “look just forget about it okay, its too much for me right now, just forget about it, I just need to do my job and bring the world to peace without any distractions, I nearly died once because of my lack of discipline to let go of certain things, its not going to happen again.
“Aang,” I saved your life, don’t you value that?, Katara painfully replies, as tears well up in her eyes, and her voice breaks even more. “Thank you”, is Aang’s only reply.
“Im sorry Aang, I guess I have been getting in your way,” Ill leave you alone from now on, you have a duty to the world, we both have to put personal things aside right now, Ill see you when you get back up, goodbye. Katara turns to leave, Aang doesnt turn around to look at her, but he can clearly hear her soft sobs echoing. Aang falls to his knees in the lake again, clearly ashamed. “What did I just do?” he wonders.
(He struggles to hold back his tears, clearly torn between that which he is bound to do, and the one girl who sets his heart free.)
As Night Falls
(Sokka and the rest of the group watch as Aang walks up the temple steps to the inner sanctum, all run to check on him, except Katara, she solemnly sits with her back turned, a distance aways facing the small campfire, she is unresponsive to the commotion, although the light from the fire clearly illuminates the tears streaming down her face).
“Are you ok Aang,” Sokka replies hopefully. “Yeah im fine, buddy” he responds quietly. “Did you do something to Katara,” he calmly asks. Like what? Says Aang. “I don’t know she hasnt been herself all afternoon since she came back from the lake to look out for you” he worriedly exclaims to Aang. “Im sure she will be fine,” Aang stammers, knowing clearly that the lie he just told is eating away at his conscience. Katara is hurting because he is pushing her away instead of expressing what he feels to her, just like he did the last time.
“Ill catch up to you guys in a little while,” replies Aang. The group replies in response, except Katara, who continues to sit morosely by the fire. Aang’s placid expression melts into one of sadness as he goes over and sits beside her, before he can speak, she replies, “you don’t have to apologize Aang, I understand fully now what must be done, don’t let personal matters cloud your judgement, but we will talk about this some other time, Im not feeling well, Im going to bed, goodnight. Goodnight, “Aang morosely replies.
*All of the Gaang is asleep, except Aang, who continues to look into the fire, as he looks on images of his astral and human form appear in the fire, but is shocked to see as an image of Katara appears smiling at him. Aang can no longer contain himself and begins to cry softly. “Katara,” he softly speaks, “I love you, I can’t keep hurting you like this. He looks up to the sky, tears fall from his gray eyes. Cut to Katara, who is sleeping, but has somehow heard what Aang just spoke, tears begin to stream out from her closed eyes.*
