^His name's Koh. I like how it could be the age they prefer (although i don't know why Roku ould choose to be old...). ;D (ahems) Just want to say that I think Roku is quite an attractive-looking gent in his old age... ;D

[/off-topic] ANYWAYS!!! If they choose their age of eternity, then I wonder what the motivation behind it is? Wisdom? Fun? Best looking?

Hmm... well... perhaps they can change their spiritual appearances at will or perhaps they look as what people expect them to look. Roku as an old gent seems to be the most popular depiction/statue of him as well as Kyoshi in her... middle/prime years, I think.

All the Avatars seem peacfull and wise. So how does the "spirit of the earth" choose the next Avatar? i mean the next avatar could be Ozai. We would all be in trouble.

I think the spirit of the Earth choose the Avatar personally. Because as the Avatar, his/her job is too balance the world.

True. Which Avatar do you want to know the msot about. For me i would love to know more about Airbendering Avatars. I mean HELLO airbending monks and nuns. How do they reproduce? And More importantly who are aangs parents. Maybe Gyatso.

It's only in Christian religion that clerics (That's people who follow religion all their lives, like monks, for those of you who don't role-play.) aren't allowed to reproduce. Except for Buddist Lamas, but that's a different story. In most other cultures, priests and priestesses are almost expected to have children one day, and have an heir to pass on their spiritual power to.

I don't think that the Avatar chooses what he or she looks like when he or she passes on. As far as the show goes, the universal forces (or whatever you would like to call them) that give balance to the world probably dictate that. Another possibility is that they look like they do when they die. Remember, Roku mysteriously vanished one day, according to the opening theme. That probably means he died when his Avatar duties were fulfilled and the spirits decided it was time to pass on the torch to the next guy.

If, as others have said, they are in spirit form the same form they were when they made an "earth in balance" sort of difference, does that mean Aang will appear to be the way he is now for eternity?

The whole Air monk thing is just like how the Jedi did worked back in prequals. The ones that had the talent were taken to the temple. Though in avatar its probably more voluntary for the parents to take their kids to the temple.
In the old Shaolin temples it wasn't uncommon for children to be sent to the temples to a monk temporarily to learn kung fu then return to their parents.

Not all of them are monks and nuns. Most live in moving tribes all over the place. Only the ones that can bend are sent to temples. The rest live their lives as.... tada! NOMADS

I'm hopeing that the writers are going to reveal more about the past avatars. I've always wondered who the previous airbender avatar was.

the previous airbending avatar probably wasnt a monk because if you look at all of the guys at the temple, they were bald. The past airbender avatar that was shown had long black hair

I wonder which past life tried to kill Koh (the face stealer). Koh said it was about 8 or 9 hundred years ago.
