Heh, I have a bad habit of over-characterizing characters who aren't given a lot of character depth. it's how I stay loyal to Haru ^^; And that's true; living in a war really does change your perspective on the future. But the thing between Sokka and Yue happened so quickly and then ended so abruptly, I still think that it was her last jab at freedom before giving in to her fate as a princess and fiance. If she really cared about her fiance, I don't think she would have kissed Sokka. She just.... doesn't seem to be the floozy type in my opinion. But I'll agree to disagree. ^^; (oo, I wonder if we'll meet her fiance in the season finale? Ah! Maybe he'll get in a fight with Sokka! xD) Ack, England has/had a lot of that marriage before love stuff too. I know a lot of it is/was for money/family/social status reasons, but I just can't understand how someone could go through with it. I could never do something like that. I would freak out. ^^; I'd rather live in the streets with the love of my life than live in a mansion with someone I hate or don't know. But yeah, I'm a mutt too. ^^; Lots of mixed blood from Europe, Russia, Native American, and... I think Israel, but I'm not entirely sure. I never really thought about it before, but I guess a lot of my ancestors were probably in arranged marriges as well. Hah, that's kind of wierd. ^^;

I think Suki is comming back... cause their going back to Kyoshi in Season 2... I saw there was an episode called "Avatar Day" where they return to Kyoshi... so Suki can kick Yue's butt now!! ^^

think her character exists as a metaphor for the society of the Northern Water tribe. She is sort of just their to help further explain things.

...I dunno. She could be deeper than all that, but frankly, I don't care. From what I could see, she was a melodramatic fusspot that was just using poor Sokka to rebel against her lack of freedom. Oh crap, now I'm over-characterizing her too! Well, whatever. As long as Sokka leaves her, I'm okay with it.

I don't have a problem with Yue. I do think it's way too fast for her and Sokka to have like fallen in love or anything. I don't even know what she means when she says she really likes him, because she doesn't even know him. Except that he's funny. And probably she thinks he's cute. And that's really all he knows about her, he thinks she's beautiful. I don't believe in love at first sight. But I still don't think she's overreacting or anything... I don't know if they should end up together, I really don't think there's any Sokka relationship I'd care to ship at this point... but I do think she should leave, or at least refuse to marry someone she doesn't love. But of course, this is from a modern American perspective. I can't imagine marrying someone you don't love. Heck, as for myself, I can't even imagine dating someone before falling in love with them. I'll probably never date anyone, but if I did, I'd have to be friends with her for quite awhile first, I think. Anyway, though, lots of cultures throughout history have had arranged marriages, and they've often ended up working out perfectly well. Not all of them can, but then neither do all marriages where people choose for themselves. Anyway, I read recently that such things (omiai) have recently had a resurgence in popularity in Japan. Well, not like they're forced to get engaged or anything, more like a cross between an arranged marriage and a dating service...
I don't think we know enough about Yue yet to judge her on a fair basis. She seems okay. I want to get to know her better. Now, if she said "I could never be with a man who carves fish that look like bears," that'd be a reason to dislike her...

Princess Yue has done nothing wrong. She isn't a bad character. She is royalty, yes. Therefore, she is expect to marry Royalty/Nobility, and engagements were arranged as soon as possible. As soon as she turned 16, a nobleman probably stepped forward and and asked her father for her hand. Or perhaps, she has been engaged since birth/young age and now that she is 16, she is old enough to be married now.
If Sokka and Katara weren't with the Avatar, they would not have even be able to speak with any royalty, let alone dine with them. Sokka and Katara are peasants, mostly due to their tribe having nearly been destroyed. If they had lived during the time of the Southern Water Tribe's city of ice, then as the children of the tribe leader, they would have been a prince and princess.. So Sokka was right about being a prince.
Yue is probably intrigued by Sokka because he is the first peasant who she could meet, let alone the first one who did not bow at her feet and praise her, etc. etc. No.. Sokka tried instead to win her favor.. which he did. Yue does not mean to hurt Sokka, but she understands how her society works and she knows she can't have anything with Sokka because she is a Princess. He is not a Prince nor any nobility. Yue also probably barely knows her fiancee. She has probably never kissed him, let alone hold his hand or speak with him except during their engagement ceremony. She probably had no say whatso and if she did, agreed to please her father..
Princess Yue is not bad, she did not cheat, and she has a fascination with a world other than the world of Royalty. She probably would love to be like Katara and we would see this if we saw her interact with Katara more. Sadly, Princess Yue and Sokka are from two different worlds.

I agree. Probably one reason she liked him so much is because he treated her like a person instead of just a princess. And her fiance probably adresses her formally instead of asking if she'd like to do an "activity" with him. Guys she's met have tried to act perfect around instead of falling of the sidewalk and carving fish that look like bears. Plus, being a princess during a war, she most likely hasn't left the northern water tribe area, so Sokka was somebody different to her, which probably intrested her.
