"a father's journey with his son" by Peter Carey it is not a Manga nor Anime but both are at the base of the story about the quest for the 'Real Japan' of the author and his son. It was an interesting read about encrypted meanings in the art work (seems like other than Miyazaki it's either not present or 'they' just don't tell outsiders) and the basis of some of the most popular series (Gundam) and the 'soul of the Samurai', aka swords. It touches base with 'visualists' (cosplay and cross dressers) and - at least to me - the benefit of actually speaking the foreign language. Oh, and it is always a plus to know people who know people
